Badlands, You Gotta Live It Every Day
That 3:30 AM wakeup call came up on us in a hurry.
When you’re staying in a place called Interior, South Dakota, you know you’re going to be in a remote area. Which meant we needed to plan the appropriate time to get out of camp, hike to the location and find a nice perch to set up for the shot. All before the 5:18 AM sunrise. I don’t ever remember the sun rising that early in the morning. Something about Mountain Time.
Come on Badlands, let’s do this.
I tried 3 or 4 spots to get the right composition and wasn’t happy with any of them. I used my trusty tools to get the perfect location.
I pushed it to the edge.
And, of course, I took the obligatory selfie.
With the image captured, it was time to hike. Since we survived teetering on the edge of the cliff, let’s see what the trail had in store for us.
OK, so we’re supposed to squeeze between that sign and the rock formation?
And climb that log ladder?
Success!
Are we really still on the trail?
OK, let’s settle down and capture a few shots.
I’m good. Temps approaching high 90s. Let’s head back.
What goes up must go down.
Back at camp, we had a chill afternoon, a nice dinner at the campsite and capped it off with a walk with Chloe …
The next day we paid a visit to the world famous Wall Drug, which is basically South Dakota’s version of South of the Border. Without Pedro.
A girl can dream, can’t she?
Next stops: Deadwood, South Dakota and Buffalo, Wyoming.
