The plan to get it home

Everyone has a plan ‘till they get punched in the mouth.

The coach was ordered from Lichtsinn RV, the largest dealer of Winnebagos in the US and located just 1 mile from the Winnebago plant in Forest City, Iowa.

That’s great, but how will we get it home? We could have hired a driver, but who wants some random guy putting the first 1500 miles on their coach? Or christening their toilet. Come on - you know you were thinking it.

So, our plan was to load up a rental vehicle with our gear (bedding, cookware, light tools), drive from South Carolina to Forest City, Iowa, go through our orientation, “camp” for a couple of days at the dealer to get acclimated and then leisurely drive it home to South Carolina.

Well, that was the plan. Until we realized that it’s going to be freakin’ cold in Iowa in December. At which point we decided to fly out there, pickup our coach and drive south as quickly as possible!

So, the new plan is to fly to Minneapolis, MN, where we’ll get picked up by a driver from the dealer. We’ll then have a 2 hour drive south to the dealer in Forest City, Iowa.

Since we’re now treating this trip as a “pickup and get it home” trip versus a “maiden camping” trip, we’ll be staying at a local establishment that goes by the name of The Cobblestone Inn & Suites. Complimentary breakfast and onsite convenience store.

We’re planning on 2-3 nights at the inn, while we go through the RV and verify operation of all the bells and whistles. We’re accounting for some buffer time in case adjustments are necessary.

We’ll then depart and drive home over the course of several days in which case we’ll be limiting our driving to no more than 7 hours each day, with overnight stops in Kansas City, MO, Little Rock, AR and Birmingham, AL.
